Dear Vida Vera The people you refer to are my direct relatives. The David Wylie born in Paisley in 1797 was my great grandfather x2. He emigrated to SA in 1838 with his wife Elizabeth Little (born in Liverpool in 1815), his sister, Mary Wylie Scott (who I suspect is your g grandmother x2), her husband Capt William Scott and their 5 children. Elizabeth Little was the daughter of John Little a merchant of Liverpool and Margaret Bartley. John's brother was Edward Little a wealthy merchant of Liverpool. He married David and Mary's sister, Margaret Wylie and they had 11 children. He then inconveniently died about 1840 and left her with all those children to raise. At least she would have had money to help her. Her son Edward Little emigrated to SA in 1850 with his wife. They also had 11 children. I can provide names later. I have been unable to discover the names of Elizabeth Little's siblings but suspect that the names of Margaret and Edward children provide clues. I can provide these names later. I know more about the ancestors of Jean Jamieson. Her mother was Janet Cochrane and she is descended from William Cochrane, Earl of Dundonald ( castle built by son of Robert Bruce, king of Scotland and the summer home of the early kings of Scotland). Charles 1 and Charles II honoured William because of his genuine devotion to the both. Fascinating history I can provide more later. Anyway Janet, cousin of the Earl of Dundonald in her own generation, married John Jamieson, and after a stint in Kilbarchan while he fulfilled his posting as Sherriff of Clackmannenshire near Glasgow, they settled in Riccarton, 1 mile from Kilmarnock in Ayreshire. Riccarton is where the father of David Wylie (who emigrated to SA) was born. He was David Stewart Wylie(DSW). He and Jean Jamieson were both born in the same village of Riccarton and after they were married in Kilmarnock in 1796, spent only one year in Paisley (where son David was born in 1797) while DSW fulfilled a one year contract to establish the Independant church there. Then he and Jean took baby David and left Scotland for Liverpool because DSW objected to the signing of the Covenant (of more later) which was required of all Scots ministers. I am delighted that someone is also interested in our family history. I suspect you live in SA do you? Of David and Elizabeth's 9 children my ggrandfather(2nd son 3rd child, John Bartley Wylie) was the only one who moved to WA (in about 1901)so his descendants live in WA (most of whom I know) b ut all the rest of the family stayed in SA as far as I know, although I have come across one descendant who went to Canberra but is now in Beijing! I detect some of Winifred Scott's research in your message. Was she your grandmother? Please get in touch and I can give you much more info re the Scottish end and perhaps you can bring me up-to-date with some of my long lost relatives in South Australia. I know nothing about the 21st century SA Wylies at all and I really want to make contact. Kind regards Mary Wylie Notify Administrator about this message?
