Joseph Pleasants of Pickanockie, Eliz Woodson/Sarah Goode-HELP
Posted by: Cynthia Swope (ID *****9381) Date: July 27, 2005 at 16:40:55
  of 1940

GENEALOGIES OF VIRGINIA FAMILIES shows that Elizabeth WOODSON, dtr of John and Judith (Tarleton) Woodson, married John, later corrected to Joseph Pleasants of Pickanockie. Quaker Records show: “Joseph Pleasants , son of Joseph Pleasants decd., of Henrico Co. marriage to Elizabeth Woodson , daughter of John Woodson , of same Co..."
That makes him Joseph Pleasants (born before Dec 1706, son of John Pleasants and Martha Cocke) a man whom Edward P. Valentine shows married to Sarah Goode, and no other woman, and with whom, per Valentine, he had 6 children.
Again in Quaker records of Henrico we have a Joseph Pleasants who in 1726 is condemned for marriage with a non quaker. , and who was disowned 4 months later. Then finally we have in 1732 his abject apologies, for responding to "saton" and taking a wife "not of the same opinion in matters of religeon with myself" while the members of Christs Church could inform these quakers of 'his trouble becaus therof'

Enter webbased studies citing Purse and Person for the identification of Joseph of Henrico married Sarah Goode, as taking 2nd wife Elizabeth Woodson.
Does anyone have the data evidencing this identification by Purse and Person?
It seems clear that if he is of Pickonockie, its got to be this Joseph son of Joseph born as above, but where did Va Genealogies get the 'of Pickonockie'-I only have it in reference to his father and the son was well an adult by this proposed 2nd marriage. Is there a will for him? I have not encountered it.
HOW, if Joseph Pleasants had children with Sarah Goode as Valentine deduces, did he make sense to his children in calling the marriage Satan induced? Was it a heartfelt reconversion that also made it easier to accomplish his marriage to the 2nd (Quaker) wife? Or was Valentine, who pursued the Woodson line with equal vigor and thirst for evidence, somehow oblivious to this second marriage?

The list of attendees for the marriage of Eliz Woodson to Joseph Pleasants does not have strong show by Elizabeth's birth family -only her big brother Tarleton and young adult male nephew Tarleton Woodson, the elder Tarleton's son, seem to be there IF this is her marriage. One could say that her family disapproved, I guess, but I just am not buying this and i WANT to.
Does anyone have something that could make me feel more secure on this identification of the Joseph Pleasants who Valentine has marrying only Sarah Goode and having 6 children with her, then marrying Elizabeth Woodson?

HELP!!!!!
