Hi! Flowerdew's Hundred list John as a barber/surgeon. He may have been trained in the military. He would not have gone to medical school as being a barber/surgeon was considered a trade and not a profession. He was probably not an indentured servant, but had been recruited by Yeardly to come to Flowerdew. Yeardly probably paid his passage in return for his needed skills at the settlement. I think an earler researcher misunderstood the term barber/surgeon and assumed a surgeon would have had to have gone to medical school. There is no record of John and Sarah marrying in England and no proof that her maiden name was Winston. I have even seen some speculation that Sarah was one of the single "maids" being brought to VA to be wives for the male settlers. She may have met John on board THE GEORGE during the trip to the new world and married on the ship. A Woodson family history says that Sarah nursed the wife of Gov Yeardley on the trip, maybe she was a servant of the Yeardly's. John and Sarah were probably "dressed up" by a family member to make them aristocrats, not uncommon in latter generations. What we do know is that John was listed in the 1624 muster with Sarah, his wife. The muster also stated they had both come aboard THE GEORGE in 1619. We might not ever know where they came from, but it doesn't make them any less amazing. Sarah must have been an exceptional woman to have survived the hardships presented by VA during that time.
