Robert and Mary Steele Archer’s children (and spouses) were: Thomas (Mary McCalla), William (Anna Peters), Mary “Polly” (married Vincent Wood 9 Jan 1817), Isabella (George Taylor), Catherine (Purnell Fisher), Margaret (John McMillan), Nancy Agnes (Robert Milburn), and Rosanna (James Woods Hogue). According to her tombstone transcription, the Catherine Archer who was born 15 Oct 1803 and died 10 Jan 1872 was the wife of John Archer, son of Thomas and Mary McCalla Archer. Catherine’s maiden name was McMullen. The Polly (aka Mary) Archer who married John Munford in 1819 was the daughter of Thomas and Mary McCalla Archer. As a descendant of Robert Archer and a native of Gibson County, Indiana, I have always heard that the Wood family and the Woods family, which also intermarried with the Archers, were two separate families.
Like you, I have not yet found any record of Vincent Wood in Gibson County after the 1820 Census. However, I did find a “Polly Wood” living in Gibson County in the 1840 Census. Polly’s household included 1 male 15-20 yrs old, 1 male 20-30 yrs. old, 1 female 15-20 yrs. old and 1 female 50-60 yrs old. Based upon a dob of @ 1782 given for Mary (“Polly”) in “The Revolutionary Soldiers of Catholic Presbyterian Church,” p. 17, Polly would have been approximately 58 in 1840.
In the 1850 Gibson Co. Census, a Robert H. (or A.) Wood, dob @ 1820 IN, is shown living with a “Mary,” age 20 or 60 (the original census page is difficult to read), pob SC. However, the 1860 Gibson Co. Census clearly shows Robert A. Wood, age 41 (i.e. dob @ 1819), IN, living with “Mary Wood,” age 76 (i.e., dob @ 1784,) SC. Could this Mary be Mary “Polly” Archer Wood, widow of Vincent Wood? Robert was the right age to have been the younger of Vincent and Mary’s two sons. I did not find either Robert or Mary in the 1870 Census. Nor did I find any record of this Robert Wood ever marrying or having children.
Also living in Gibson County in 1850 were Charles Wood, dob @ 1814, England; James Wood, dob @ 1795, NC; and William Wood, dob @1817, TN. Of the three, William is the best candidate for being the older of Vincent and Mary’s two sons, although I cannot document that he was with any certainty. Thus far I have not found anything on the daughter in Polly’s 1840 household. I hope some of this is helpful.
