Name: John G Raab
Sex: M
Birth: 1835 in Germany
Death: AFT 1870 in Atlanta, Fulton Co, GA
Fact 1: Probably served in the Civil War as a Confederate soldier in Atlanta.
Fact 2: Mary Diehl's will considered his wife to be Katy.
Fact 3: He married Katy during the Civil War either in Georgia or South Carolina.
Note:
[samuel morris 1793.FTW]

John George Raab, also J. G. Raab and George Raab, was born in Germany. Charles Raab, "Charlie Boy", told his daughters, Renee and Charlene, that he thought the German relative entered the USA via New York City. Renee said, "My father never got to see the Statue of Liberty. He thought it was neat that I got to go. He had heard stories that his ancestor(s) first saw this Statue of Liberty and its symbol of freedom." The stories also included that the reason for the Raab's immigration to the USA was due to persecution in their homeland.

There is a Raaba or Raabtown near Graz in Hungary. Further research will reveal when J. G. Raab came over, possibly which ship, and his city of birth in Germany.

J. G. Raab may have secured the help of a Mary Diehl, born in Maryland and 15 years his senior, when he arrived in America. Mary Diehl notes him as deceased in her will in 1875. She is living on 181 Hunter/Davis Street in Atlanta and in her will, she bequeaths her furniture, etc., to Katherine Raab, mother of John George Raab, an only child. To John George Raab, whose father she names as J. G. Raab, she wills her house and lot.

The 1870 Georgia Census reveals that J. G. Raab went by George and the last name is spelled as it sounds, RHABB. He is 35, born in Germany, his wife, named Katy, is 21, and one son, John is 4. She is listed as born in Georgia as is John. Later census says Katy or Katherine was born in South Carolina as were her parents. John's year of birth is different too, showing he was born in 1866. His tombstome says 1864, the 1920 census suggests 1869. I am not sure which is right at the present.

The 1870 census shows that J. G. or George was born in Germany and that John was born in Georgia. This suggests that the Raab family was in Georgia during or immediately after the Civil War. George is listed as a Carpenter by trade, Katy a housekeeper. Where J. G. and Katy met or married is not known. She appears to be 14 years younger than him. They could have met in South Carolina before coming to Georgia. Whether Mary Diehl came with him to Georgia or was already here is not known. Her will states that she bought the Hunter/Davis Street property October 4, 1869. The 1870 Census was in July 1870 and shows that they were all living there together at that time.

J. G. Raab died unexpectedly between 1870 and the time of Mary Diehl's will in 1875 and was between 35 and 40 years old. There must have been a special relationship between the families, and Mary did not have any known living relatives in Atlanta (no other Diehls in Atlanta in 1860 or later). She is not in the 1880 Census, suggesting she died before that time. The house passed to Katy and John, her son.

In the Roster of Confederate Soldiers, there is a G. Raab who served in the Third Battalion State Guards, Co. A, Atlanta Fire Battalion, as a Private. His service card lists him a "Present 8-3-63 to 2-3-64." There are no other Raab's in the area that I have found. If John's birthdate is 1864 in Georgia, then the Roster listing of G. Raab could be more than enough to link them together as father and son.
