Wood Native Americans in Texas

Seeking to correspond with descendants of a Wood family from the area of Hamilton/Eastland/Comanche/Stephens/Erath Counties in Texas (mid 1800s to early 1900s) who have a family legend of descent from a Native American tribe. My husband's 2gr-grandmother, Mary Rebecca Wood, married Frank Carl Deaton in the 1860s. They lived in this general area. She may have been born c1850 in Leon County, Texas, and appears to have married in Bell County. Her descendants all tell that she was a full-blood Native American, but no one knows the tribe for sure. My father-in-law in my hearing sometimes said Cherokee, and sometimes Choctaw. I have seen two portraits of her with her husband and children, taken at separate times, that seem to support the Native American claim. In the two census reports I have found that list her, she is said to be White. Given the times, this can be explained away if there is evidence to the contrary.

If you have any information that can help us find the ancestry of Mary Rebecca (Wood) Deaton, please contact me. If you prefer to do it privately, my email address can be found by clicking on my name at the top of this message.

Thanks in advance for any help.
