Background Work:
Children of THOMAS WOOD & Molly Tillson:
1. WOOD Simon, of Thomas and Molly, June 18, 1771.
2. WOOD Reuben, March 5, 1773.
3. WOOD Amma, Sept. 12, 1774.
4. WOOD Comfort, March 18, 1776
5. WOOD Levina, Sept. 26, 1777 (Twin).
6. WOOD Susanna, Sept. 26, 1777 (Twin).

All of the above is verified in Rhode Island, Vital Records 1636-1850, by James N. Arnold, and Vital records of Mendon, Massachusetts to the year 1850, Mendon births.

The "Mysterious items"...
1.)
Taken from the will of Jonathan BOYCE [1753-1794] dated 12 Apr 1794:
"...I give & bequeath to:
....my beloved Brother Lucius Boyce....
....my loving Sister Sarah Hall....
....my Sister Jehoshaba Capron wife of Charles Capron....
....my loving Sister Phebe Cook, wife of Preserved Cook.....
....to JOHN WOOD and William Hall, children of my sister, Sarah Hall, my wearing apparel....
....to POLLY WOOD daughter of PELEG WOOD…
....to the children of my brother Benjamin Boyce deceased....
....to LOVICE WOOD wife of PELEG WOOD the sole use and improvement of all my Real Estate....
....use and benefit of the said LIBERTY and JONATHON BOYCE WOOD and for them only....
....unto JONATHON BOYCE WOOD one equal half of my Real Estate after the decease of his mother Lovice Wood....

Added to the will of Jonathan Boyce, dated: 28 May 1794:
....the said JONATHON BOYCE WOOD lies at the point of Death...
....that POLLY WOOD daughter of Peleg Wood and Lovice Wood shall have and hold in the same manner and in the same way that said Jonathan would have....
Will proved: 2 Sep 1794"

2.)
Application to the War Department by POLLY WOOD dated 27 Aug 1834 (requesting bounty land as heir to Revolution War Soldier, Private Jonathan Boyce):
"....further testify and declare that my GREAT UNCLE, JONATHAN BOYCE, aforesaid departed this life at my mother’s residence in Mendon, Worcester County, Mass about forty years ago...."

3.)
Norfolk 16 Sep 1834:
"I Sherman Leland judge of the court of probate in & for said County of Norfolk hereby certify that satisfactory evidence has been presented to me to prove that JONATHON BOYCE WOOD mentioned in the forgoing Will & Codicil died when he was quite young & long before he was twenty one years of age & that LIBERTY WOOD, also mentioned in the foregoing will, died about sixteen years ago – that he left WILLIAM H. WOOD & MARY ANNE WOOD, his only children & heirs law, that the said WILLIAM H. WOOD & MARY ANNE WOOD are still living – and also that POLLY WOOD mentioned in the forgoing Will & Codicil is still living.
In testimony whereof I have present set my hand & affixed the seal of said court this Sixteenth day of September A.D. 1834."

THE MYSTERY:
Jonathan Boyce died a bachelor (never married). His will refers to his "brothers & sisters", and although it is obvious that LOVICE WOOD (wife of PELEG WOOD) is his niece, he does not say so. POLLY WOOD makes this connection clear in her Application to the War Department. Sarah (Boyce) Hall, b. 14 Mar 1745/46, is the only one of Jonathan’s sisters old enough to be the mother of LOVICE WOOD. Sarah Boyce married William Hall, 25 May 1780 in Upton, Worcester Co., MA, and the record does NOT state that she was the widow WOOD. Jonathan states that JOHN WOOD and William Hall [Jr.] are "children of my sister, Sarah Hall", indicating that she was probably married (or ???) earlier to a WOOD, i.e. the father of JOHN WOOD.

QUESTION:
Do any WOOD family researchers know this family? Can anyone add insight to these records? ANY and ALL input would be appreciated!

Carrie Mackenzie
(Boyce family descendant)
