DISCLAIMER: I DO NOT RESEARCH ANY OF THE SURNAMES SHOWN HERE. I am simply reporting the obituary of Pauline Wood Cargill that appeared on the July 18, 2009 issue of the Longview News-Journal in Longview, Texas.

PAULINE WOOD CARGILL

Pauline Wood Cargill, 96, died Thursday, 7/16/09. A Memorial Service Was held 7/20/09 at Radar Funeral Home with burial in Memory Park in Longview, Texas.

Pauline was born 11/13/12 in Longview to Bob and Ida Dee Harriss Wood. Her Harriss great-great-parents, Thomas and Dolly Roach Harriss, came from Rock Hill, SC to East Texas in 1846, where they operated a stage stop near the present intersection of Rockwall Drive and US Hwy. 80. (Personal note: This is in the Greggton area of Longview, where I was born.)

Her great-grandfather, Pleasant S. Harriss (m. Susan Peeler) was constable when Gregg County was formed in 1873. Her grandfather, T. B. Harris (the final 's' was dropped around the turn of the century) acquired substantial land holdings in the White Oak area and constructed Lake Harris. Her grandmother, Willie Little Harris, was the daughter of S. Miles and Mollie Biggers Little.

Her paternal grandparents, John and Anna Sitton Wood, arrived with their family by train from near Corinth, Mississippi in the late 1800s. Her father was a farmer and a familiar figure at the Norton & Barbee Grocery Store for many years. (Personal note: Norton & Barbee was a grocery store located just SW of the Gregg County courthouse and a 'gathering place' when country folks came into town.)

Pauline moved from the family farm into Longview where she lived with her aunt and uncle, Clara Harris Hays and Gregg County Sheriff Martin Hays, to attend Longview High School from 1928 to 1931. At LHS, she was a standout basketball player.

She attended Mary Hardin Baylor college for two years before her marriage to Robert Cargill in 1933. She was a loyal supporter of her husband's business and civic activities until his death in 1986. (Personal note: Bob Cargill was involved in the oil business.)

Pauline was prededed in death by her parents; her brother, Thomas Wood; her stepmother, Gladys Wood, and her husband, Robert Cargill. She is survived by her son & daughter-in-law, Robert & Martha Cargill & their children; daughter & son-in-law, Paula & Charles Kaplan of Longview & their children; and step-sister, Elma Ash of Longview as well as a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
