In my search to identify the early Warfords and Woffords in America, I also have run across the entry you cite. A little bit more to the story is: Thomas Manning (bn 1641, VA) married a Fnu Wafford in 1664. His brother, John Manning (bn 1643, Norfolk Cy, VA) married Sarah Wafford in 1664. John and Sarah had a son, John Manning (bn 1667), who married a Sarah Wattford in 1684. In what looking I could do from San Antonio, I was unable to get a clearer picture of what happened. My impression is that back in these years you are dealing with the initial Mannings in America, and Manning researchers are having a difficult time sorting them out. I also learned that Wattford is a name; what it derives from I have no clue. I believe that only en situ research in the Chesapeake Bay area will provide answers as to the identities of these 17th century Warfords/Waffords/Woffords. If you are so located, great! If not, I don't think you are going to find much secondary material that will help. We can only hope! Please let us all know if you receive any documentary replies. Fred
