The 1855 census listing that you are having trouble with reads:
(Town of Davenport, Delaware Co.)family number 253 Utter, Stephen 22 bn Mass;Eunice 26, wife, bn Mass; Ellen 1, child; Edmund 5/12 child. The date of the census was 19 June, so Edmund was born in Jan/Feb. The Jesse you mentioned finding in the 1865 census is Jesse and Nancy Webb Utter. Jesse is the son of Stephen and Lydia Higley Utter. Stephen & Lydia had Edmund M, 1822; Jesse, 1823; David, 1826; Mary Jane 1827; Henry, 1829: Sarah, 1831; Stephen D, 1834; Aner 1836; Samuel, 1838; Henry 1840; and James Madison, 1844/5. Stephen D. was married to Charlotte Martindale.
