German or Swiss?

All of the Turnipseed research I did years ago traced back to Turbenthal, Switzerland in the 1500's. I got the impression that perhaps this was a central port out of which many people traveled & where records were kept, and not necessarily where they all lived. Did anyone else find this to be true?

I was told my ancestors were German, so I was confused as to why it would trace back to Switzerland. Any ideas? Anyone find Turnipseeds tracing back to places other than Switzerland?
