Mark ... Many thanks for your post, which I only just saw. Dan Everson has done an amazing job of documenting the history of the former Swearingen/Shepherd properties which the NCTC now occupies, especially when you consider that he's done it while having a full-time job there. I met Dan, and shared notes on the family history (First Branch), during a visit to Shepherdstown and the NCTC in 2001 (I'm the J.S. Swearingen III mentioned in the 1780 section). The previous year I was privileged to be given a tour of "Maple Shade", the stone farmhouse my my g-g-g-grandfather, Col. Van Swearingen (younger brother of the Thomas you mention), built c. 1759 on the Springwood tract, by Mrs. Jessie Hendrix (deceased 2008), who had lived there since 1960. Unfortunately, only fragments of the headstones and footstones in the burial ground on the hillside adjacent to the house remain visible. There is at least one other cemetery on the former Swearingen properties and, additionally, a number of Swearingens are buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Shepherdstown.
