Swearingen Family Genealogy Forum

I was able to visit several of my ancestor burial sites this summer. My father, William Joseph Swearingen and my grandfather, Guy Howard Swearingen are buried in Sac City, Iowa. My first and second great grandparents are buried in GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) Cemetery in Homer, IL. Homer is a small east central Il town. William Way Swearingen and Johnson Armstrong Swearingen are buried with their wives in a mausoleum - one of two in the cemetery. It was humbling to see the name "Swearingen" over the door. You could not see in but I was able to meet the Legion member responsible for the cemetery and he found the records of who was buried there. My third great grandparents are buried in St. Stephens, Il, a town near Homer. I did not realize they were there so I did not visit their graves (I have pictures from a long lost cousin). Finally, I stopped in Lewis Co., Ky and went to East Fork Church (Cabin Creek, KY)to see various Swearingen graves - possibly my fourth great grandparents - John Swearingen and Jane Barkley. While I could not find their specific graves there are numerous Swearingens buried there (unreadable stones) along with some Barkleys. It is rumored they, too, are there. They lived in the area most of their lives. The church is only five or so miles from the Ohio River which they came down to settle the area. So, I have been able to walk the haunts of all of my great grandparents except John Swearingen and Catherine Stull in Fayette Co, PA and Thomas Van Swearingen and Jane Doyne/Hyde in MD. I plan to visit St. Marys City, MD again on March 29, 2009 for the 350th celebration of the statehood of MD. Will you? Thanks.
Tom Swearingen
