I have found in "Probate Records of South Carolina" Vol. 1 by Brent Holcomb a listing for James Swaringham 21 Sep 1775, no location listed (probably Prince William Parish), vol BB pages 73-74. Since it has the same date you have for Joseph I suspect that it was abbreviated Jos. and was mistakenly read as Jas. or vice versa. i would very much like to see these probate records. I wonder if I could get someone to do lookups in SC.
