I am a descendant of Michael Higgins and Frances (prob. Hendrickson) through their daughter Jennie who married John Miller of Bedford/Somerset counties. Jennie's sister Sarah Higgins married Daniel Stoy. So the Higgins, Miller, and Stoy families are tied together in numerous land transactions and documents. I have done some research on Daniel Stoy in order to try to find the back trail of the Higgins family. As you know already, Daniel Stoy was an early settler in Bedford/Somerset, specifically living in or near what is today Stoystown, which he founded. Daniel can be found mentioned in numerous documents as he appears to have been a JP, was a State Representative at one point, and generally was well-respected and held various civil posts. So it is possible that the relationship you describe is a personal one but also possible that Daniel was acting somewhat in his general professional capacity of JP, witnessing land deeds, etc. I have not personally come across any McAfee (sp?) references that I recall in Daniel's history, but I wasn't looking for that surname, either.

The land patented by John Higgins included what is today called Beaver Dam Creek as it runs into Stony Creek. So it is just south of Stoystown, basically.

There are complete plats of the patents in the Somerset County courthouse.
