I'm pretty sure there is no American connection between Dr. William Stoy and Daniel Stoy. I've seen 1960s-era letters where one Daniel Stoy descendant tried hard to make room for Daniel in Dr. Stoy's family but the names and dates just don't leave room for him (a secretive name change was suggested...). Dr. Stoy's family is well documented. It seems highly likely from what I've seen that Daniel Stoy was a son of Peter Stoy/Stay who immigrated to Pa. in the 1730s and settled in or near Philadelphia. This Stoy family remained in Philadelphia for over 60 years. Its members have a strong naming pattern overlap with Daniel Stoy's family, including other members with the name Daniel. Some of this family's men had land warrants in Somerset County - presumably through the recommendation and/or aid of Daniel. I haven't gathered everything together in a database but I'm pretty sure that Daniel's parentage isn't really that big a mystery - it just hasn't been thoroughly researched and published. / Tom
