Residence: (Banks?) Vol II, W.Tisbury, p 71: James Skiffe, Sr., was a non-resident
proprietor, with little island history, but his sons James, Nathaniel, Benjamin,
and Nathan became settlers on MVI.
James,Sr. owned one of the first home lots. He first appeared in New
England at Lynn, MA, about 1635, and is said to have come from London. He had
some association with Isaac Allerton of Plymouth, who came from London and was a
passenger in the Mayflower, 1620, and "for his service Donn to Me Isaack
Ollerton" he was granted land in Sandwich Jan. 14, 1636-7, which place became
his permanent residence" (from Plymouth Colony Court Orders, I, 98). He was
representative to the General Court, beginning in 1645 for 13 years, and in 1656
was appointed to train the militia, and in various ways was a leader in public
life of Sandwich.
His interest in this town undoubtedly was of a speculative character,
brought about through his son James and his acquaintance with James Allen, and
was subsequent to the formation of the partnership of James, Jr., with Peabody,
Allen and Standish. He was admitted as a proprietor on May 20, 1673 (Sup. Jud.
Court Files #4974) and granted a full share of land. His lot was on the west
side of Old Mill river, and his holdings in the town are thus enumerated:
"Thes are the Lands of Jeams Skiffe senier (in the) the township of
tisbery: one lot containing forty ackers Bounded on the est By the reiver on the
north By thomas wests Lot on the south By the heyway that leieth on the north
sid of henery Luessis Lot and so runeth from the reiver westward fore poles in
leng6th and one Lot In the gret neck Bounded on the est by Jeans allins Lot on
the west by Samuel russeles Lot with a sixteenth part of all undevided landes
and meddo the devided Landes Being more or les as thay are Laied out thes are
the Landes purchused by the above names Jeams Skiff - recorded by ordor of the
town febbarary the 5: 1674". He gave this lot to his son Nathan June 15, 1675.
His first wife is said to have been Margaret Reaves, and his second Mary. It is
not known which children belong to which wife.

James became a proprietor at Lynn, Mass. in 1635, being one of the original
settlers. He was Deputy to the General Court in 1645 and for 13 years after. He
served in the Governor's Council; he was appointed in 1658 "to exercise the
militia"; he was a Yeoman; he was a Freeman in 1644. He opposed harsh measures
against the Quakers (Friends), for which he was refused his seat as Deputy to
the colonial court.
Cf. book on James Skiff by Frederick L. Pierson (1895); Banks' "History of
Martha's Vineyard," Vol. 3. In addition to the children shown here, he may have
had Elizabeth (who d. 25 January 1676). He lived for a time on Martha's
Vineyard, according to one correspondent. "The Pioneers of Massachusetts,"
Charles Henry Pope, gives James' wife's name as Mary. of. "Sandwich, A Cape Cod
Town"; "Hist. of Tilton Family in America," F. T. Tilton, pp. 152-3.
