Realize this is an older quiery, but I go out kerplunking ever so often--does this help?
I have some new information (for me anyway). Just found some
descendants of Asahel SIMMONS, brother to Samson.

Dennis SIMMONS was born in Currituck Co., the son of Thomas and Martha
Dunton SIMMONS and grandson of Major Asahel SIMMONS of the Revolutionary
forces. He was bereft of his parents at a very early age. His first
job was as a "hand" on a sailboat operating between the North Carolina
coastal area and to the West Indies. The wages were low; nevertheless,
he saved 50 dollars in a year when he was 19. He married in 1857 and
soon thereafter he began the manufacture of shingles at Astoria a mile
from Jamesville. Later, fire destroyed his plant which he replaced with
a loarger structure in 1887, eprmitting him to turn out 75,000 feet of
lumber per day. It is claimed that this plant became the largest ever
to operate in North Carolina. SIMMONS became a millionaire. He died in
