Does anyone know of a RUTHERFORD/RELAFORD b. abt.1825 TN, who married abt. 1844 AR or MO Nancy THOMPSON b. 1829 IL? He was too young to be listed by name on the 1840 census, and by the 1850 census he'd left for California, and was never heard from again. The story is he was killed by Indians somewhere along the way.
I don't know his first name. I've heard Robert, possibly, or William, or even Finney. When his son, William R. RUTHERFORD/RELAFORD died in 1930, William's son provided information for the death certificate, and said his grandfather's name was John. "John"? had already been dead for 80 years by this time, nearly 40 years before the grandson was born, so I don't know if John is the correct name, or the grandson just thought that might be it.
Even"John"s wife, Nancy, when filing for a pension on her second husband, just refers to the first as "RUTHERFORD." No first name mentioned. His daughter's death certificate says "RELLEFORD." Again, no first name mentioned.
The family was in Barry Co. MO in the 1840s, spent some time in Benton Co. MO, and possibly Benton Co. AR. Nancy apparently moved to Searcy Co. AR in 1850, living there and in Izard Co. AR before moving to OK where she died in 1902.
This appears to be a family that avoided all written documents whenever possible, so if anyone has run across this family, I'd be most grateful for any information.
