Strange Names

Wow, I'm surely glad that I don't have an ancestor whose name was "Finney"! That sounds like someone's pet goldfish!

All my ancestors had good, solid, common names: Statirah, Jerusha, Azariah, Lemuel, Noorman and Volkertse. You know, the names you'd give to your children.

Actually, the name which seems to run through every branch of my family tree is one that I see in countless posts on these Forums. So far, I appear to have descended from this person nearly 100 times. I'm really proud of the name, because it must be the most common name of all. No matter the family branch, I soon discover that I am a descendant of "Unknown".

Unknown surely was the "Johnny Appleseed" of progenitors. No family was complete unless there was, at least, one marriage to Unknown. This profligate, promiscuous, genderless individual, ranged the country, like a human Cuckoo bird, dropping children into the nest of every family related to me. Without Unknown, none of us would have been born at all.

I am so proud to carry the DNA of Unknown from so many sources, but, there are others who don't feel that way. They hate Unknown so much that they are willing to replace the name with that of anyone in the area. Just because Unknown has no documentation, They fill the place of Unknown on the family tree with a John, or a Robert, or a Milly, for whom there is, actually, no more documentation than exists for Unknown.

Oh, why do you despise Unknown? Is there no one who will come to the defense of Unknown? Is there no one who will demand documentation to show that the replacement for Unknown has any right to do so?

Ron
