An additional clue to Abel's parentage: Two of his sons, in their 1880 census entries, reported that Abel was born in Conn. and that their mother was born in N.Y. His reported birth in Hartford, Conn., cannot be confirmed. Hartford County or District is more likely to have been his birthplace. Surrogate Court and Land Records of Onondaga County are not helpful, but should be reexamined.
