1830 Franklin County, TN census lists two William Russells
A William Russell is on Indian Creek waters of the Barren River on the
1799-1800-1801 tax Roll in Barren County Kentucky. Major William Was also
recorded on a road Jury, and Mary "Polly, and Dicey Russell, were married
in Barren County, There was also a George and John Russell near by living
in Barren County Kentucky. [note Absolom Wagner born about 1803 in Barren
county Kentucky that married Susan Russell] [ Susan was probley born in
Franklin County Tennessee about 1813]
This Indian Creek Deed can be traced to Warren County in about 1792 and
to Jefferson County Kentucky in January 6 1785, just a few months after
William and Agness sold the Boons creek tract in the early winter of
1784."
EHT-This Indian Creek William cannot be William husband of Agnes Smith
who was in Grainger County, TN by 1786 and Dickson County, TN by 1792.

County, Tn. in about 1800 were Major William Russell, who settled on
Boiling Fork, near Cowan, and Jesse Bean, who settled on Bean Creek.

acres, White County, second district, 9th range, 2nd section, on the
Boiling Fork of the Elk River, beginning at a sassafras on Absalom
Russell's north boundary. (ET White County was created in 1806 and
included what would become Franklin County in 1807)
MacKellar, Chuwalee, Chronicles of Franklin County, page 42: In 1808 the
first Franklin County elections were held. The act incorporating the
county prescribed that Court was to be held in Major Russell's home on
Boiling Fork, near where Cowan now is, and the Court continued to meet
there until 1814. In addition to making Major Russell's house the Court
House, the Legislature provided that the musters should be held on his
premises. Absalom Russell was the first county clerk.
By deed dated 6 Mar. 1810, Wm. Russell of Franklin County, Tn. deeded to
Hugh Montgomery of Franklin County, for $800, tract on waters of Boiling
Gork of Elk River, beginning at a sassafras at southeast corner of said
Russell's 200 acre tract and on Absalom Russell's north boundary line,
being 160 acres. Proved by oath of William Russell, before Absalom

George Russell b. 1720 in Loudoun Co. (now) Va. d. in fall 1796 or early
1797. He was killed by Indians in the fall of 1796 or early 1797 while on
a hunting trip from his home German Creek, in Grainger Co., Tn. , with
Daniel Boone. He married Elizabeth Bean b. 25 Nov 1723 in St. Setphens
Parish, Northumberland Co., Va., d. p1800 at her home on German Creek.
Elizabeth Russell was listed in Capt. George Bean's Company in Grainger
Co., Tn. in 1799. (Early East Tennessee Tax List by: M.B. Curtis 1964)
She asked to be dismissed from Bent Creek Baptist Church in Jan. 1800.
(Minutes Bent Creek Baptist Church 1785-1844). Their known chldren were
born Pittsylyvania Co., Va. and in the Watauga Settlement, Washington
Dist. and Co., N.C. (Tn. now).

Tennessee, organized as the Bent Creek Baptist Church June 12, 1785
Among charter members: George Russell - Mrs. George Russell
Members of the first five years: # 73, Russell, George and wife: William,
Elizabeth, and Jemima. George was a captain in the Revolutionary War. Two
land grants of 900 acres on the northside of the Nolachucky River. He was
one of 13 commissioners from Watauga Association (political) William gave
his name to "Russellville." He received two land grants totalling 500
acres on the northside of Nolachucky. Revolutionary Soldier.

June (1786) Second Saturday: The church met and received William Russell
by experience and baptism.
October Second Saturday (1787) : Church met and received allegations
against William Wells by Tidence Lane, William Russell, and Richard Byrd.
(Mr. Wells had been charged with unseemly behavior with a woman at
unreasonable hours of the night)
February second Friday 1790: The church met and received Elizabeth
Russell by experience
March second Saturday, 1790: The church met and received Jemima Russell
and Rachale Lane and Caleb Witt and Negro Terry by experience.
2nd, Luke Lea made application for a letter of dismission, and it was
granted. Sunday received Mary Hoskins by experience and appointed the
second Saturday and Sunday in May for a sacrament meeting.
February the second Saturday (1791): The church met Br. George Russell
and Brother John Ward to be cited to the April meeting.
April the second Saturday (1791): The church met and Br. George Russell
and Br. John Ward being cited to this meeting appeared and difficulties
adjusted.
January 1800 the second Saturday: Sister Elizabeth Russell is dismissed.
Jemima Russell, alias Horner, is also among those dismissed, but the date
is not recorded.
There is a list of existing members in 1817...which is preceded by a list
of those dead, excommunicated, and dismissed. George Russell is on the
dead list. William, Elizabeth, and Jemima are on the dismissed
list...There were no Russells in the church membership of 1817.

Lt. Col. William Russell, born 1678 in England per T Knight: Per Research
Of Terry Knight: L T. Col. William Russell (b. 1678 Eng d. 1757 VA) came
to Virginia with Gov. Alexander Spotswood. This William Russell may have
practiced as an attorney. The Augusta County Court was formed in 1745 and
the 'Court Judgements' on Dec. 9, 1745 state that "....., William
Russell, ........qualified attornies." Also the Court Judgements for
Nov., 1746 note a letter from William Beverly to 'Capt. William Russell'
dated "Octonia, Sept. 18, 1746" authorizing Russell to Represent Beverly
in a land dispute.

frontier were granted to William Russell's with dates of service
appropriate for his age. Others were probably awarded to his son and

John and William Russell are mentioned several times in The History of
Pittsylvania County by: Clement, 1929. On page 41, "John and William
Russell came in 1743 and gave their name to Russell's Creek on Smith
River". On page 52, "William Russell is appointed surveyor of the road
from the falls of Banister to Fuqua's Ford (on Stanton River)". On page
56, "When Tithables were taken in 1750 William Russell was on Sandy
River". On page 123, "on the motion of Sundry inhabitants (being
Dissenters) leave is granted to build a Meeting House on lands of William
Russell, on the Drafts of Difficult Creek. (1755)".
The name of the wife of William Russell is unknown but the following are
believed to have been their children and there were probably others:

This bunch I just threw in under the supposed father of George and
John...whom we have listed as William Russell (a generic Wm. Russell)
This does show John Russell as being in the area by 1739....which is
cutting it pretty close....so if he and Capt. George were brothers, John
was probably older. Now....you will see that there are two Wm.
Russells...one being Jr. and one not designated.
You probably know that this does not denote father and son..but that two
people in the same area bearing the same name had property...needed to be
labeled to tell them apart. In some cases, obviously, the junior really
is a child of Sr.
George doesn't enter into the transactions until the 1760's....but I'd be
hard pressed to tell you if he sold out and when he sold out, if he
did. But if he went from Halifax to Surry Co. N.C. as some folks think he
did...then there ought to be a gap in this somewhere to show that
absence. I also have in my notes that Wm. Bean (he of the Dan River) was
married to Lydia Russell in North Carolina, perhaps Greensboro?? in the
late 1740's. So wisdom tells me..rightly or wrongly that some of these
folks took a brief detour into North Carolina before going to
Watauga.....and they could have gone together. I might add that one Jesse
Bean or Been handled some of the Orange County affidavits for the
revolutionary pension of George Horner, Jr. (b. 1761) and his supposed
widow, Priscilla Winslow.
