The 1860 census, George Russell household, Lafayette, Onondaga Co., NY certainly does NOT pertain to Emeline Hultz Russell Demott Jones. This same George Russell and family is found in Lafayette on the 1870 census as well. In 1870, the above mentioned Emeline Hultz Russell Demott Jones was already widowed twice, and is enumerated as Emeline Demott in Hempstead as mentioned in the previous post. Emeline may have married HENRY RUSSELL as her first husband, for in 1848, Elizabeth, daughter of Henry and Emeline Russell was born 24 Jan in Hempstead ("Hempstead Biths, Marriages & Deaths, 1847, 1848, 1849," NYGBR 55 [1924]:275). Patrick and Maria would be candidates as Emelines' parents. However, the fact that Emeline appears next to Patrick Hults on one census record is not conclusive evidence in itself. This is especially true in the Five Towns area of Hempstead, a small geographic area that was dominated by a few family surnames (there are many Hults, Demott, Jones, Brower, etc. families in this location through the 1800s). The 1830 census should be consulted. Emeline apparently was born about 1825, 1827 or so, and finding a Hults head of household in 1830 with a daughter under age 5, may be a more reliable clue to Emeline's parents. Also, all possible B,M,D, records for Queens Co. should be searched for an Emeline Hults, but since they are incomplete for this place and time, probate records for Hults individuals should be searched. Hopefully one will mention a daughter "Emeline Russell, Demott or Jones." Hope this helps. Chris Chester Notify Administrator about this message?
