Thanks so very much JC for the help! When I noticed that Samuel Cooper's birthplace was given as CT, I thought, I just bet it's the 1880 census, and sure enough! I don't know why, but that particular census, in PA, has problems, especially switching the birthplaces of parents - I've seen it many times. I think it was the same census (1880), where brother of Silas and child of Samuel and Mary (Russell) Cooper, Theron, from whom I'm descended, was listed as being born in Canada. All the other censuses say New York, and what I think the census taker heard was "Canandaigua." It's been a mystery, his birthplace, which is supposedly Darmouth, or Dartmouth, but I find no such place in NY, and I expect it has something to do with Candaigua, but I can't prove it. I kind of get the idea, that the Coopers and perhaps the Russells too, were a bit transient over the RI, CT, NY, and PA borders, which has probably helped strenghthen the mystery. Thanks so much for you help - apologies for long explanation, but, one more thing, it seems the Coopers were Baptists, and Theron part of establishing a Baptist church in Annin PA. I believe being Baptist was big part of RI community especially in colonial New England.
