Note:
He moved to Alexandria, Ohio with his parents by 1798. He and family moved to Fayette Co., Indiana in early 1820s. He helped to build the canal and then moved to Illinois. He owned much land in Fayette Co., and Rush County before going to Clay Co. Illinois about 1851.
He served in the War of 1812. His record # is BA - J/CC B.L. Wt. 50133-160-55 and says: "Alexander Russell enlisted July 28, 1813 and served as a private in Captain Robert Russell's company, Ohio Militia of which William Russell was a lieutenant and was discharged September 8, 1813 at Columbus, Ohio.
On September 14, 1855, then a resident of Clay Co., Illinois, aged fifty eight years, Alexander Russell applied for bounty land which was due on account of his service in the War of 1812. On this application, he was granted bounty land Warrant # 50133 for one hundred sixty acres under the Act of March 3, 1855

Note:
According to Edith Puntenney Pennywitt *Mrs. P.L.) her father compiled a family history and in it he told the following story. "At the time of the siege of Ft. Meigs, there was a call for all the militia and grandfather's was a general rendezvous for the bare footed militia of Greene Township, Adams County, Ohio. As good luck would have it, my grandfather's tan trough was full of half turned skins. He emptied the trough and cut all the skins into moccasins and they were whanged up in short order and in about 24 hours, Uncle William Russell (Lieutenant William Russell marched his squad of young Buckeye Militia toward the front."
In the Ohio Roster of 1812, published by the Adjutant General of Ohio in 1916, on page 114, William Russell is given as a Lieutenant in Captain Nathaniel Beasley's Co. Since there were several William Russells in the family later, this man was always called Lt. William after the war.
