Three years ago I bought a handwritten journal from a bookshop in York as it looked interesting. It proved to be fascinating and covers a trip from London to St Helena in 1824-25 and the return in 1828. 1829 was a Grand Tour of Europe. In April 1830 the writer describes a voyage fom London to New Brunswick and after a month's stay returns to London. The journal ends with brief note on endless tours of the British Isles, presumably on business, during 1833-36. There are poems, quotes from Shakespeare etc and it is a fascinating read, especially re storms at sea. BUT-nowhere in the journal does a family name occur, and he gives few clues. He does name many influential personages in London, perhaps to do with business and I have deduced that he might be a commercial representative, maybe on commission. He is obviously also of a wealthy family. CLUES- 1. His father is Isaac, he has a brother George who perhaps lives in Greenwich, and he has a sister Ann. CLUES- 2. His father rents a house in Bath, 13 Pulteney Street (very expensive) and his sister Ann married there on 27th May 1824. SOLUTION- The only marriage in Bath on 27th May 1824 was Anne Eliza RUMMIN who married Arthur PARRY of Westbury, Gloucestershire. Poor Rate books for Bath show that in 1831-1833 Mr & Mrs RUMMIN paid rates on 13 Pulteney Street. WHAT NOW-There are many Isaac RUMMINGS entries in Camberwell. In Bath Grace Maria RUMMIN, d of Isaac & Mary was bapt 16/4/1795 (Bath Abbey) & Thomas Frederick RUMMIN, s of Isaac & Martha was bapt 28/12/1796 (St Michael). Please can anyone identify my mystery RUMMIN? A wait with fingers crossed & many thanks to anyone who can solve the mystery. Mike Stephenson Notify Administrator about this message?
