A biography/family history of William F. Rhea is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, pages 906 and 907. His grandfather, Elija Rhea was an early settler in Missouri and, with his family, in 1854 settled in the Willamette Valley of Oregon, where he became a wheat grower and stock raiser. He later moved to Eastern Oregon and conducted a hotel at Arlington, where he died about 1884. He was married to a Miss Milliron of an old Pennsylvania Dutch family. She died in Junction City, OR. Elija was married three times.

William was born, 30 Oct 1874, son of Thomas A. and Henrietta (Cecil) Rhea. Henrietta died in Oroville, CA, in 1916. She was the mother of four children: Iona (Mrs. J.W. Widrick, Pasco, WA); William F. (Bainville, MT); Cora (Mrs. Harry T. Bagley, Hillsboro, OR); Walter E. (died in childhood).

William was raised and educated in Oregon. In 1895 he came to Eastern Montana and for five years was a cowboy riding the range on the Sieben Ranch. In 1900 he became a squatter in the area of what would become Bainville, MT. He eventually filed a homestead claim and accumulated 880 acres on which he raised stock and grain. In Jun 1917, he opened the First National Bank of Bainville, of which he was president.

On 27 Mar 1900, Williston, ND, William married Miss Ella A. Bruegger, born 10 Sep 1878, Watertown, WI. She was of Swiss ancestry and the daughter of Nicholas and Minnie (Heiz) Bruegger.

Rhea children: William T. and David E.
