Samuel Ray, Rhea Albemarle 1770's--??any ties to Stephen Phillips??

In researching our Phillips' of Albemarle County 1700's, I found a deed for land sale from Samuel Ray to Stephen Phillips. Stephen's wife was Susannah, first name unknown. The county records has several different spellings for Ray, Rhea, Rea. The Phillips and related families moved west, to WV and KY in late 1700's and early 1800's. I checked in the Garrard Co. KY records and found many Phillips and Mayfields, also some Ray's (Zachariah was one). Zachariah was witness to a marriage of at least one Phillips girl. There are also some Ray families in Amherst county, where these Phillips lived for a while. I wonder if anyone knows of a direct tie between Phillips' and Ray's? It seems like a possibility, at least.
I am searching for some proof of the parents of my great great grandparents, Jacob Phillips and Elizabeth Coleman, of Amherst VA. We suspect his father's name was Jacob Sr, and his mother's first name Sarah. Just can't pin anything down. Jacob was born in Amherst in 1780.Thanks, Jim Phillips
