Retes family members. Spanish descent, possibly also Swiss, Rhaeto, poss Irish.

The Retes were Spanish. My grandmother, Carmen Retes, was the dau of Modesto Retes and Dolores Corral, both b. in Spain, however, Modesto Retes mother was French, whereas all the other grandparents of Carmen Retes were b. in Spain.

Carmen also had a sister named Dolores that had married a man from England with the surname of Clark.

I am trying to trace the origin of the Retes family. At present, it is a possibility that they are from the Retes or Rhetes ethnic group also called Rhaeto which speak the Romansch language, which is the language of the Retes/Rhetes, and which is an official language of Switzerland to this day. The people known as Retes or Rhetes are from Southern Switzerland, Northern Italy in the Piedmont areas, and Southern Austria.

Missionaries from ancient Ireland had settled in the area of Northern Italy and Switzerland. I am also tracing them.

Anyone with the Retes surname may happily reply, and any others with info as well.
Thanks,
ER
