Ross: A popular misconception about the civil war, was it was fought over slavery, which it not, the reasons for the war was there were two different economy's emerging and politicial differences had a big part in the cause, in 1859 the republican party was formed in chicago, its agenda was well published, it mostly held that the federal government should have sole control of the government and states would yeild to it, at the time there existed an unfair taxation of the states who asking for a fair spreding of the federal revenues and their rights as states be recognized, in 1860 the republican ran its first candidate for office and more or less said they care nothing about states rights or of redoing the spreading of the tax revenues, abraham lincoln won the election, withen weeks south carolina, declared its self as bankrupt ans secced from the union, withen weeks 7 other southern states did the same, it must be realized that the country had grown to be to saperate types of economy and to different frames of political mind set it was just a matter of time which would touch off hostilitys, the republican party just happened to force the actions to be set in motion, it changed the course of history for many of our ancestors, besides costing well over 600,000 of them their lives....jim
