Ross, I believe this is the Frederick Wray/Ray who was listed as a witness for your George Wray in Bute Co NC in 1778:

Frederick Wray born ca. 1758----He married Nancy Harwell 26 Mar 1787 in Brunswick Co VA after serving in the Rev. War.
In 1800 he shows up in Iredell Co NC----By 1805 he is in Hancock Co GA, but finally settled in Tuscaloosa Co AL.

Note: Frederick was living in Iredell Co NC at the time my ggg grandfather Benjamin Wray(1755-1841) named a son Iredell. Got to be a connection there!
