Raymond:

The American Revolution was from 1775-1783

The 1830 Haywood co., NC., Federal Census for John RAY shows:

John RAY - Age 60-70 so b ca 1760-1770

So He Could Indeed Have Served In The American Revolution:

If b 1760 {the earliest date given} then he would have been 15 yrs., old when the war began and 24 yrs., old by the time it ended.

Frankly, I always prefer to accept the individual's word on the 1850 Census ie., he was b ca 1778 but people sometimes fudge on their answers.
But since your Grandfather did not apply for Veteran's Benefits, it is a pretty good forgone conclusion he did not serve.

Still that is one reason why one need the 1810, 1820, 1830, 1840 and 1850 Census records when they are available.
