hi my name is nigel ray and i live in limerick i have just come back from france where i done a tour of where the d-day landings happened and i found out that during the airborne drops into st mere eglise two paratroopers were caught up on the main church as the were struggling to free themselves a german soldier came around the corner and as he was about to fire a third paratrooper dropped within yards of where the troopers were caught up the german soldier turned around an shot the paratrooper several times in the chest and stomach as he was dying on the ground he took out his side arm but was unable to lift his arm to fire he let off a shot and with the recoil of the gun he fired off another shot hitting the german soldier in the head killing him thus saving the 2 paratroopers who would have been killed had he not shot the german soldier the name of the paratrooper that gave his life to save to other paratroopers is SGT JOHN P RAY of the 82nd airborne after i heard the story about john p ray it made me interested in finding out about my family tree so if anyone can help that would be great
