Not To Worry Raymond - I'm Guilty Too - Of Memory Lapses - That Is!
One of the most exciting things to happen in Virginia Genealogy Research is the placing of the early Southampton Co., VA Court, Deed, Marriage & Misc., Records on-line:

Some of it is indexed, including the 1750-1853 Marriage Records for RAY, John, pg 107.
1796 - RAY, John m JACOBS, Sally - James HILL, Sam MELLOY
If one does not have a copy of the original record you can make copies from the on-line source which to me, is absolutely fabulous.
As you realize getting the footprints of John RAY and his bride Sally JACOBS, from Southampton Co., VA., to Haywood Co., North Carolina, is necessary for "Proof" of the Genealogy.
The Court and Deed Records of Southampton Co., VA., should show when they leave the area. I have not done that research.
Nor have I done the Court, Deed, Tax and Vital records of Haywood Co., NC., for your family - See Posting #9457 This Forum.
Since one needs at least 3 Census Records for an individual, as they are not always reliable, the following Haywood co., NC Census Records may prove helpful.
