Lou: I understand what your saying, francis ray volenteered as bondsman, could that mean he had some sort of business interest, at about the time in history he and ralph griffen had a common interest in a plantation between the meherrin river and a creek in brunswick co va as lease holders of course the common interest could of have been the crop of the day tobacco, and not to uncommon for commerce of the day small crop growers would team up to make their share of contributions to the market bigger and cut cost of transport for those who involved, the main through fare for those above falls growers was warehouses on the upper james, where merchants bought it or from transport by the farmers (or group of farmers) to river transport to the markets at richmond at the falls, yeilding higher proffits for those who banded togeather and cut out the warehouse above the falls, I've studied commerce of the day and maybe that's where francis ray came in, as some sort of business partner or fellow grower.....jim
