I'm not sure that this is the optimum place to do it, but I'd like to jump into this discussion of Francis Ray/Wray with a riddle you've not addressed.

In 1746, when Robert Sanford died, Seth Pettypool and Francis Ray provided security for the widow's administration of the estate:

“December Court 1746. Ann Sanford granted a certificate for obtaining letters of administration of the estate of Robert Sanford, her late husband, deceased, on her giving security. Seth Petty Pool and Francis Ray are her securities.” [T.L.C. Genealogy, Lunenburg County, Virginia, Court Orders, 1746-48, p. 38.]

And in a few months they Seth Pettypool and Francis Ray appeared again with:

“April Court 1747. Present: Robert Jones, Gent. On the motion of Seth PettyPool and Francis Ray allege that they became bound with Ann Sanford to this court for her due and faithful administration of Robert Sanford, her late husband, deceased, that Ann has since married John Forrest, and that Ann and John are wasting, squandering, and embezzling the estate of said Robert Sandford, whereby said complainants are in danger of suffering by reason of their suretyship. Ordered that John Forrest and Ann be summoned to appear at next court to show cause why the estate should not be delivered up to the said securities.” [T.L.C. Genealogy, Lunenburg County, Virginia, Court Orders, 1746-48, p. 66.]

Both the Pettypool and Ray/Wray clans were not-too-distant neighbors of the Robert Sanford family, but they did seem to take an unusual interest in the estate.

Seth Pettypool, was the father of John Pettypool, the latter of whom married Sarah Sanford, one of the children of Robert Sanford. John Pettypool and Sarah Sanford married shortly before the December 1746 application for administration (most likely), but at least shortly thereafter. So Seth, as the father-in-law of one of the orphans, certainly had an interest in seeing the estate properly administered.

So, I ask myself, why was Francis Ray/Wray similarly involved? Was it possible that one of his sons married another daughter of Robert Sanford?

Food for thought as you try to wrestle with assembling this family and their relationships...
