Hi Melissa,
Have you researched any Rays in Orange co NC in the 1780's? The reason I ask is if you remember I said my George Ray/Wray and wife Rachel attended church at the New Hope Church in Chatham co NC in 1790 and probably before that. I could not find any records where George owned land in Chatham co NC in the 1780's. I knew he was listed in the 1786 tax digest for NC in 1786 in Warren co NC but Warren co NC is no where near Chatham co NC so he must have moved after 1786. I looked at a map trying to find where the NEw Hope Church was located in Chatham co NC and it is in the northeast corner of Chatham co NC. It is near the border of Orange co NC which is just north of Chatham co NC and it is just west of Wake co NC. I have never researched Orange co NC and have researched Wake co NC very little. When the William Ray listed in the 1790 Wake co NC census bought land in Chatham co NC in 1791 a Baker Ray or Wray and a Mark Wray witnessed the deed. Mark Wray or Ray was the son of my George Ray and Baker Wray owned land in Brunswick co Va in the 1770's almost next to Geroge's land and Baker Wray owned land that joined George's land in 1786 in Warren co NC. He was possibly George's brother. I figured Mark wray ande Baker Wray must have been living in Chatham co NC but wince Wake co NC was just a few miles to the east of Chatham co NC and they signed as witnesses for William Ray who was living in Wake co NC maybe they were living in Wake co NC in 1790 and po9ssibly related to William Ray. Maybe they were living in Orange co NC just a few miles north of Chatham co NC. When George and Rachel Ray joined the Powelton Baptist Church in Ga in 1791 they transferred from an arm of the New Hope Church in Chatham co NC. I assume an arm of the New Hope Church meant that they lived out in the wilderness not close enough to attend services at the New Hope Church but probably a preacher from the New Hope Church would hold services out in their area occasionally. If that is true then Geroge and Mark and Baker Ray might have lived just across the county line in Wake co NC or Orange co NC but since New Hope Church was fairly close although it was in Chatham co NC. the area William Ray bought land in 1791 in Chatham co NC was in easter Chatham co NC not far from the Wake co NC line. Thanks, Ross
