Thank you for the 1653 deed record, which I did not have. Some other published records showing that both CHESLEY and RAY men lived in seventeenth century Virginia include:

1621 May 16, Richard CHELSEY, one of Sir Lawrence Hyde’s servants, was living with Thomas Cumber at Martin’s hundred (7) (Records of the Virginia Company of London, vol 3, p. 45). (1)

1627 June 23, officials at Bridewill Decided that James WRAY, a vagrant brought in from Coleman Street, would be detained until he could be sent to Virginia (Complete Book of Emmigrants, p. 78). (1)

1628 February 9, The General Court learned that Sir George Yeardley had brought John WRAY to Virginia in 1621 on the Temperance. WRAY’s headright was assigned to Thomas Flint, who used it when patenting some land on 20 September 1628 (Minutes of the Council and General Court of Colonial Virginia, p. 166, Patent Book 1, part 1, p. 59). 1650 June 7, Patent Book 2, p. 220. Phillip CHESLEY, 400a in James City Co., VA, On the eastward side of Chickahominy River. Bounds: Mr. Robt. Holt, Mr. Felgatt, and Mr. James Cricket, decd. (for transport of 8 persons, not named) (1)

1650 June 97, Patent Book 2, p, 238. Phillip CHESLEY, 400a on the east side of Chicohominey River in James City Co., VA. Bounds: Little Neck Creek, Mr. Robt. Holt, and Mr. Felgatt, Mr. James Cockett, decd. (for transport of 8 persons. (1)

1650 John RAY, by Mr. Stephen Hamelin, Charles City County. (2)

1651 April 07, Patent Book 2, p. 321. Edward Bosse (or Besse), 189a. Bounds: Phillip CHESLY, to Chipeake Creek near Mr. Felgate’s land on the south side of Chickahominy River. (for transport of 4 persons) (1)

1652 John RAY, by Richard Coleman, ____ Co. (2)

1653 Elizabeth RAY, by Maj. John Westhrope, Charles City, Co. (2)

1656 John RAY, by Sir. Henry CHICHLEY, _____ Co. (2)

1665 September 27, Patent Book 5, p. 398 (and a similar patent on p. 201, 07 October 1668, was approved, apparently). Edward Sanderson 300a in James City Co., VA. In Chickahomany River, 2300a being maine land and 700a including 3 islands of woods and marsh. Bounds: Sanderson’s Creek, Sir William Berkley’s line, Jno. Felgate, and Sanderson, Col. Robt. Holt, Chekerors Creek, Piney Poynt Creek. 2200a granted sd Sanderson 20 January 1650 and 400a granted to Phillip CHESLY 07 June 1650, who assigned it to sd Sanderson 06 August 1652. 150a granted to Wm. Morgan, who assigned it to Jno. Browning, who assigned it to James Cockett. And 250a for transport of 5 persons (Robt. Colby, Jno. Williams, Evan Waters, Peter Williamson, and Margaret Jones. (“This patent received false.”)

_____ (date blank, but between patents both dated 23 October 1690), Patent Book 8, p. 82. Dan’ll CHESLEY witnessed the following: John Howard 172 perches in James City from northeast corner of the Church Yard along the rayles thereof to Honble. Nathl. Bacon, Esqr., along the old Great Road, etc. Note: the Governor wou’d not sign this patent of John Howard. W. Edwards, Cl. Gen. Cou.
