Did a RAY in 1700’s marry a HUDSON in VA or NC?

Does anyone know of a marriage between a female HUDSON and a male RAY/WRAY in the eighteenth century?

HUDSON was used as a given name in the family of William WRAY/RAY of Wake Co., NC. I am trying to determine if HUDSON could have been the surname of his mother or a grandmother.

HUDSON RAY was mentioned in the Revolutionary War widow’s pension application of Elizabeth (Pearce) Ray. Elizabeth identifies him as a brother of Thomas, states that he was wounded in the Battle of Eutaw Springs [Sep 1781] and died in hospital after the battle.

About ten years later, when HUDSON’s father William was getting his affairs in order before leaving Wake Co., NC, William RAY was appointed administrator for the estate of HUDSON RAY. The following year, 1792, administration for the estate was passed to HUDSON’s brother Thomas RAY in the neighboring county of Franklin, NC, and a certificate signed by William and Chesley RAY was presented showing that they agreed to this transfer. Since his permission was required, this record suggests that Chesley RAY was a son of HUDSON RAY. Chesley RAY soon moved to Georgia, where census records indicate that he was born 1770-75.

HUDSON’s brother Thomas RAY named a son HUDSON although almost all records indicate that he spelled his name HUTSON.

Regards,
Dave Ross
