Hi David,
I have some more info about the Rays/Wrays.I had said I thought there was a good chance you descend from William Wray born about 1700 and purchased land in Brunswick co Va in the late 1720's and had sons Baker Wray and William Wray and possibly George Wray who was my ancestor. I said I thought there was a chance that William and Anne Wray sold their land in Brunswick co Va in the late 1760's and went to Bedford co Va which was near Brunswick co Va. Although my George bought land in 1778 in Bute co North Carolina which is the county just south of Brunswick co Va and Bute co NC became Warren co NC in 1779 I did find a George Wray living in Bedford co Va in 1778 or 1779 according to the book "A short Census of Virginia-1779". I thought maybe George just bought the land in NC but did not move there at that time. I knew he was listed in the Warren co NC tax digest in 1786 and Baker Wray or Ray and William Wray were there also and their land joined each other so I thought maybe they were brothers. William Wray Sr (1700)died in 1778 or 1779 in Bedford co Va (if it was the same William Wray born about 1700). Thanks to your research about George Wray you were able to prove that George Wray was in Chatham co NC in 1790 which I had figured he was but could not prove. When your William Ray who lived in Wake co NC next to Chatham co Nc bought land in Chatham co NC in 1791 Baker Wray and Mark Wray (George's son was named Mark) signed as witnesses. I still needed a Bedford co Va connection to verify that William Wray (1700 and living in Bedford co va and died about 1778) was their father. A researcher sent me an email saying they had found Baker Ray in the 1810 Bedford co Va census. It is so hard to read it is impossible to tell what age he was but no one had ever heard of Baker Wray until I found an obscure reocrd a few months ago. The problem is I found a record saying Baker Ray died in Chatham co NC in 1794 and had a thirteen year old daughter. I don't know which Baker Ray this was and I don't know for sure who the Baker Wray in the 1810 Bedford co Va census was but at least that is the Bedford co Va census i have been looking for. as I said I don't believe anyone has ever researched the William Wray line (1700). His brother John's descendants have been well researched. I read where you or your wife did all the research in the1990's about George Wray and you did an excellent job. If you still would like to try to find some more info about George please try to find if he owned land in Chatham co Nc in the late 1780's or 1790. He left Chatham co NC in 1790 and went to Wilkes co Georgia. You apparently know who to find the right records. If George was asked to be on a jury he probably owned land there which means there should be a deed or a tax list showing a George Ray. Also, since Baker Ray or Wray signed as a witness for the land William Ray bought in 1791 in Chatham co NC maybe you can find a record about Baker Ray. I believe there is a connection there that will show you who your ancestors were. Thanks, Ross
