Carl,

Yes, the name Chesley Ray was carried down for several generations.

Chesley Ray #1 went from Wake Co., NC to Wilkes Co., GA. He is the earliest Chesley Ray I am aware of, and was mentioned in my post at the beginning of this thread.

Chesley Ray #2 was a son of John and Tabitha Petty Ray. John Ray was a minor in 1794 when he appeared as an orphan of William Ray in Chatham Co. Court to choose his guardian, and therefore born after 1773. He chose as his guardian Thomas Brinkley.

Chesley Ray #1 and Chesley Ray #2 both appear to be grandsons of William Ray of Wake and Chatham counties.

Chesley Ray #2 is named in his father’s will in 1837 in Randolph Co., NC.

1837        Randolph: Estate of John Ray: Administrator’s bond for Presley Ray and Mark Ray 06 Feb. Petition of Tabitha Ray, widow, for year’s support, Feb, states that John Ray died Nov 1836. Report of year’s support, 27 Feb, J. Cooper, JP; Joseph Hoover, Ansel Pierce, and Thos. Pierce. Sales list 28 Mar. Final Account and settlement named heirs as Widow Tabitha and nine children: Chesley Ray; Presley Ray; Mark Ray; Nancy Ray; Mary, wife of Edward Pulliam; Betsey, wife of Thomas Tucker; Jourdan Ray; Sally, wife of George Gaddis; and Cynthia, wife of Benjamin Thayer.)

Chesley Ray #2 may have been in his father’s will in NC, but he had long since moved to Indiana.

1823 Chesley Wray of Wayne Co. IN bought 80a on 5 Aug from USGLO, S14 T17N R2E 2ndPM Marion Co., IN.

1830 census Marion Co IN, Pike twp: Chesley Ray 1wm<5, 2wm 5<10, 1wm 30<40 [b 1790-1800, consistent with reported age at death in 1869], 2wf 10<15, 1wf 30<40.

Chesley Ray #2 had a son John Ray (named after his father) and a grandson Chesley #3, as shown in 1850.

1850 Census Hamilton Co Clay twp IN: John Ray 28, Jane 22, Chesley 4, Allen 3.

1860 Knox Co IL census, Chestnut twp., Harmon: Chesley Ray 62 {b 1798] farmer b NC, Jane 62 b VA. Adjacent to Mark Ray 31 [b 1829] farmer b IN, Rachel 26, Rufus 9, Eliza 8, boy 2.

1869 Chesley Ray #2 died in Illinois in 1869, as reported in 1884.

1884 "Chesley Ray, Sr., a native of North Carolina, came to Pike township [Marion Co., IN] in the winter of 1822-23, and settled with his family (wife and two children) on land now [1884] owned by Amos Smith, east of Eagle Creek. Some years afterwards he boughtan eighty-acre tract, now land of William Jennings. He was also owner of several other farms at different times. He moved to Illinois, and died there in 1869, in his seventy-fifth year [b 1795]. He had five chiildren, three sons and two daughters. His first wife was the second adult person who died in this township, in May, 1826." [ancestry.com, B.R. Sulgrove, History of Indianapolis & Marion County, IN, 1884]

It may be that the name continued to echo down the generations, but the focus of my query is, “Why was the first Chesley Ray named Chesley? Could it have been his mother’s maiden name?”

Best regards,
Dave
