Hi Dawn, sadly, I am unaware of any photos, though it is possible some may be held by Taranaki Museum, or local historical societies. Am glad to hear you have transcribed the full memoir for Turnbull Library. Years ago I was fortunate to be given a zerox from a typewritten transcript of Catherine Ralfe's handwritten memoir. Reading those long, long sentences (about a paragraph length with almost zero punctuation) I used to smile, wondering if Catherine talked as endlessly as she wrote?! But she is never boring. She was obviously blessed with keen observation and narrative writing skills. Catherine Ralfe's memoir was instrumental in helping me pinpoint certain genealogical events in my own family history: In the memoir, while at Okarito, Catherine mentions observing the arrival by coastal steamer of my Gt.Grandmother (Margaretha, the wife of miner Schonbohm) & her two daughters. At that time my Gt. grandmother spoke mostly German & had very little English, but despite this communication problem the two soon became friends. Catherine mentions the death of Margaretha's first husband; her subsequent marriage to my direct ancestor William Carter; & after the birth of the three Carter children, the sudden death of second husband William Carter. Catherine tells how her friend Margaretha fled to Wanganui with five children, and how some years later Catherine came to board with Margaretha at Wanganui. I became intrigued by the many RALFE genealogical clues in the memoir and over the years gathered some info on this interesting family, which I decided to post on this website, where it could assist their descendents. Glad to hear you found it. Cheers, Peter. Notify Administrator about this message?
