Am reposting this message as I noticed that keying "RALFE" did not reveal my original entry.

I was told that the surname RALFE should be pronounced “RAYF” not “RALF” which suggests that it should have a separate listing from “RALPH” ????

Part of the fascinating memoirs of Catherine Hester RALFE (born c1832 Bantry Bay, Ireland - died 5 Apr 1912 Ashhurst, New Zealand), can be seen online at “Dictionary of New Zealand Biography-Vol Two” http://www.dnzb.govt.nz/dnzb/default.asp?Find_Quick.asp?PersonEssay=2R2

To my knowledge, Miss Ralfe’s memoirs have never been published in full. This is a pity because her memoir, written about 1896, contains a lot of genealogical information, and useful comments such as that c1866 “of my three brothers, one was in South America and two in New Zealand”.

In New Plymouth, New Zealand (in the historical document archives of the Public Library or Puke Ariki Museum) there are some more handwritten RALFE papers/documents.

Luckily there are a number of other online sources, such as:

Unfortunately some of those websites have omissions &/or errors.

Many of John Henry's family subsequently settled in Taranaki.

Hope this helps.

I am not related, but Catherine Hester RALFE was a close friend of my Gt. Grandmother, whom she mentions several times in the full copy of her memoirs.
