James, Thanks for the info. I am aware of this 1500a and from the description that I have the land was two miles from the River, (James)and backside of Merchants Hope. Merchants Hope Plantation has been hard to pinpoint and the historian for the Prince George Co., VA, Historical Society has been unable to give me an answer thus far. What I have gleaned is that it covers land from Chapell's Creek on the west to Powell's Creek on the east and north to the River. It encompasses the Powellbrooke Plantation that I believe was located near the mouth of Powell's Creek. There is also this deed: 1657 Patrick Jackson and Richard Baker sell to James Ward 100a part of 1500a Pat. by Rev. Richard Jones, adjacent land of Capt. Richard Tye and Thomas Wheeler. I have the plats for the land of Richard Tye and Thomas Wheeler and the area fits the 1500a. The problem is that it is a long way, abt. 5 miles from Blackwater Swamp. There must be another parcel of land that Baker was living on that I haven't identified. On the surface the location of Thomas Weikes/Weeks' plantation wouldn't be that important except he came by this land sometime bet. the rent roll of 1704 and the deed reference in 1711. My thought is that he may have married into a family and obtained the land in that manner. Finding the owner of this plantation prior to 1711 may hold the key....or at least that is my thought. Thanks again for the info. Walter Notify Administrator about this message?
