In Halifax Co NC, in 1779, Stephen Pace and Major Walker sold property together: MAJOR WALKER and STEPHEN PACE to JESSE BRYANT, 20 Aug 1779. 750 pounds. 160 acres, joining Hills Mill Branch, BLACKBURN, Kehukey [Swamp], FOREMAN. MAJOR WALKER, STEPHEN PACE, ANN PACE(x). Wit: JOS. NELMS. JOHN BISHOP, STEPHEN BARKER. Aug Ct 1779. Examined by Henry Montfort Esq, ANN PACE relinquished her right of dower. (Halifax Co DB 14) This land which was jointly sold by Major Walker and Stephen Pace, with dower rights relinquished by Ann Pace, could have been inherited by both men, if for instance they were cousins or second cousins. Alternatively, it's possible the land might have been inherited by Major Walker and Ann [?] Pace, if Ann Pace was Stephen Pace's wife. An earlier Major Walker was a son-in-law of William Fort (Halifax Co NC DB8, p155, cited in "Adventurers of Purse and Person", 4th ed., Reynolds section). William Fort held land on Kehukey Swamp in the vicinity of the land which was sold in the 1779 deed cited above. It has been suggested that Major Walker (m. FNU Fort) might have been a son of Henry Walker of Bertie Co NC, on the grounds that Henry Walker was married to a Judith Major, hence the name "Major Walker" for a son. I would be interested to know if there is evidence for such a marriage. Henry Walker did have a wife named Judith (will of Joseph Clapham, Bertie 1733, wit. Judeth Walker, Henry Walker), but there seems to be no evidence that she was a Major or named a son Major. Any further information on this would be of interest.
