Thanks Wendy,

As far back as I go is Richard Metts b. 9 dec 1830 in Indiana, (I don't know what county) and for a while lived in Iowa before he died. Richard Metts I found on the 1860 census, then they were in Decatur, Decatur County, Iowa. His birthplace on that census is Indiana, not Mashaska County, Iowa as I have. They were married in Maska County, Iowa 14 Sep 1850. His wife Margaret's birthplace is also Indiana. The family was Richard Metz, age 29, Margaret Metz, age 33, and son Francis M Metz, age 7/12. They were in Decatur, Decatur County, Iowa. He was a farmer. They had just the one son, Francis Marion Metts. Then Richard went to war and died at the battle of Vicksburg in May 1863. Margaret from then on never remarried. She continued to live with her only son the rest of her life, and she lived to be 100 years old. I have no info about Richard's parents or sibblings. If you can tell me if any of these people are in the book that would be great, if not, maybe any clues you can give about Metts in Indiana around the 1880 time period. (I'm sure if there is one there is many) The rest of my Metts family lived also in Grand River in Decatur County, Iowa.
