Hi Ginny, I will try to give you some reasons why we find some many different spelling when we start searching for our ancestors. 1. Back in the 1800 and early 1900's people wasn't well educated and as they went from place to place their names were spelled by store keepers, family members and others that spelled names by sound. 2. Another reason for the different spellings is that sometimes when people left one place and moved to a new location they didn't want to be found so they change their name to be spelled a little different. 3. Some of the census takers didn't know the correct spelling and had to spell the name by the way it was pronounced. 4. Sometimes the name was changed because the person was hidding from the law or someone else so they changed their names.
I hope this helps clear the misunderstanding. Good luck in her research.
