I am currently investigating the family of Cornelius and Margarey Reynolds of Old Rappahannock Co., VA, as a possible source family for my Reynolds' ancestor whose name begins to appear abt. 1760 (some two or possibly three generations later) in the Court Records of Caroline Co., VA. Cornelius and Margarey’s dau., Susannah, b. abt. 1662, m. John Goss. John Goss d. abt. 1698 in Essex Co., VA, and Susannah remarried in 1705 to Thomas Meadors in Essex Co.. Susannah (Reynolds) Goss Meadors d. abt. 1707 in St. Anne’s Parish, Essex Co. Thomas Meador remarried to Ann Saliss in abt. 1707. In the number of land transactions recorded for Thomas Meadors, it has been reported on the Meadors’ Family Forum that, on 02 Jul 1695, Meadors conveyed the Deed for 150 acres of land on the south side of the Rappahannock River to Josiah Ship, described as land "whereupon said Josiah Shipp now lives." Josiah Ship/Shipp is reported to have d. in Jan 1704/05 in St. Anne’s Parish, Essex Co., VA. In his Will dated 29 Jan 1716/17, Thomas Meadors named Josiah Shipp’s sons, Richard, Josiah and Thomas as follows: Wiil of Thomas Meades {Meadors] Essex Co., VA, Wills, Inventories and Settlements of Estates No. 5, 1717 - 1721 Pg. 1 - 3 Will of Thomas Meades [Meadors] of the County of Essex and Parish of Saint Annes, being sick and weak in body, dated 29 Jan. 1716/17. To my well beloved wife Anne Meades my two oldest Negroes, viz. Sambo and Nanney, during her natural life and after my wife's decease to return to my well beloved son John Meades. But if my said son should dye before he is possessed with the said Negroes then to Thomas Coghill son of Frederick Coghill and Sarah his wife. To my loving wife Anne Meades the plantation whereon I now dwell and two hundred acres of land during her life and after to my said son John Meades and if my said son should dye without issue before he comes to the age of twenty one years then to Richard Ship. To my son John Meades my young Negro called Sarai and one mollatto called Tom Cutter and if my said son should dye without issue to my brother in law John Salliss. To my son John Meades one case of bottles ad one iron kettle. To my said sone one young gray mare. To my said son all my land at Powmonsend except one hundred which I give to John Sallis. If my said son dye without issue then to be equally divided amongst Wm. Davis, Josias Ship and Thomas Ship. All the rest of my personal estate to be divided between my said wife and my said son. Mr. Thomas Catlett, Gent., and my loving wife executor and executrix. Thomas Meades Wit: Samuel Bizwell, Richd. Billups, Margarett (X) Dudley. 21 Jan 1717 [1718]. Presented in Court by Ann Ayres late Ann Meados, executrix. Proved by Samuel Bizwell and Margaret Dudley. {Name written Meados in margin.] [transcription from Dorman, John Frederick, "Essex County, Virginia Records, 1717 - 1722," Washington, DC, ca. 1959, pg. 37] The earlier Deed from Thomas Meadors to Josiah Ship/Shipp and the fact that Josiah’s sons were named in Meadors’ Will suggest that there was a family relationship of some sort between Meadors’ and Shipp’s families. I am posting this inquiry on both the Meadors and Shipp Family Forums. I am hopeful that one of the Meadors or Shipp family researchers/historians has information to share on the nature of this implied relationship between the two families.
