John Mead[e] married Sarah A. ?

Looking for a John Mead[e] born about 1809 [he was age 71 in the 1880 census]. He and his wife, Sarah A. age 59 are living with the Henry Barton family. John and Sarah are listed as "Step-Father-in-law and Step-Mother-in-law". From this census [1880 Ashland, Boyd Co., Ky, page 250A] How are they related? I cannot find John nor Sarah in any earlier census. Really need help on this.
