The best way to do this research is with a DNA test. I am the project coordinator with the McKane DNA project... and we are having excellent results. We have found at least five groups of Kanes. Some desecend from the Ó Catháin family of Dungiven, others are of different origin. We do know for a fact that some of the McKeen families are from the Ó Catháin line, others are not. To date most the Kane surnamed people we have tested are descended from the Dungiven Ó Catháin family.
